Omaha Sessions!
Posted by frase @ 15:02 on 30-01-2006
That's right boys and girls, I have secured myself a mint condition copy of Omaha Sessions on eBay! Won the auction and paid for it today, so now all I have to do is play the waiting game and wait for it to arrive from the US. My 311 Discography is edging ever closer to the threshold of completeness.
I'm terribly excited, as you can probably tell.
In other news, um... Bagurk! No really, that's about all I have to say for now. Ciao!

comments on 2005's Hottest 100
Posted by frase @ 19:32 on 27-01-2006
Rightyho, where to start? Well, it was a far better lineup than last years. Of course, nothing in recent years has even come close to the glory days of the late '90s, but there is hope for this decade yet. Sadly, not a great deal of the '05 batch epitomises that hope, but there is a glimmer of it.
But let's start at Numero Uno. Bernard Fanning - Wish You Well. Well, I really like the song, and most of Bernard Fanning's recent work both with Powerderfinger and on his own. So yeah, definitely happy with that, especially given the rest of the top ten.
Definitely, something this year had going for it was *variety*! Still, nothing like the late '90s again but definitely one of the most interesting lineups in recent years. Highlights include a few tracks from the Herd and the Cat Empire (who got four tracks in which is very respectable; every track deserving). And of course, there was Bedroom Philosopher - I'm So Post Modern which, although unashamadly gimmicky, is a larf and a half and well deserving of it's entry at #72. And 20 up on that is America, F*** Yeah!. Nuff said.
Kanye West - Gold Digger is, for me, another highlight. It's a prime example of Triplej's continuing diversification, and the listeners' acceptance of this. I feel that it's not so much the Triplej programmers testing the waters as it is the Triplej programmers actually realising that there's a lot of great music out there that would be correctly categorised as 'RnB' or 'Pop', yet is thoroughly defiant of the mainstream.
Sadly, dance music was entirely snubbed in the 2005 H1H, which is sad (again, I look back with fondness on the late '90s), but of course it's all part of the ebb and flow of the music tide and dance will, I'm sure, rise to prominance again. Thankfully, we're seeing a move away from the whole 'Franz-Strokes-Killers' samey style that has dominated the alternative scene for the past 18 months, and that's a welcome and long-overdue move in my opinion.
Aussie hip-hop continues to rise, and rightfully so! In fact, Aussie music in general continues to rise. This has been one of the Aussie-est lineups in memory, possibly the *most* Aussie (though I'm too lazy to actually work that out), which is awesome. And an Aussie artist takes back the #1 spot so hurrah for that!
And Wolfmother, not that I particularly like them, took out six places which is a record. Kudos to them, although I feel that they're definitely more of 'the right thing at the right time' than 'a really awesome band'. Not that they're bad; quite good in fact, but not my cup of tea.
So, in summary. A good lineup. Better than last year. Waaay better. But no late '90s. But promising, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

RiversLAN Summer '06. Three days of lantastic goodness. It's over, it was great, and I'm stuffed. Still. And very greasy... still. Like Timmy said... "Just drink lots of water; it will dilute the fat".
So that's what I'll do. I'll station myself on the computer, streaming the Triplej Hottest 100 broadcast (which, actually, hasn't been so bad so far, although we're only up to about no. 90 so that doesn't say much), and drink lots and lots of water.
Oh, and of course, HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!!!

this post proudly brought to you by the number 63
Posted by frase @ 18:52 on 21-01-2006
Well, seems pretty silly now but we *really* should have branched for theme development, given that the 'theme' that was there was very good at doing what it was designed to do: namely, show that the system is working and output some useful debugging data.
But revision control was invented for a reason, and moments like these, where the system is broken because of development that, in retrospect, should definitely have been branched and merged, are moments where revision control systems shine. Revision 63... that's the one with the good ol' theme before development started. So, the solution... copy the theme directory in question, as it existed in revision 63, as a new theme, and then change a few settings in the database it to use it.
Scuba remains unaffected, and I get my debugging output. Yay for revision control.

LightTPD: impressions
Posted by frase @ 23:43 on 18-01-2006
Don't be fooled people. Any rumours you hear about LightTPD + PHP (FastCGI) being faster than Apache 2.2 + PHP (apxs2) are utterly false. I spent most of the afternoon/evening fiddling with LightTPD and in the end, Apache was about 15% faster and a heck of a lot more versatile.
LightTPD has a lot going for it; some important functionality is missing but the static performance is there. It's easy to see why it's gaining a lot of momentum, but it's not there yet. Improve the rewrite engine, adopt a more intuitive vhosts system and bloody well get some proper PHP support and we might just have something to truly rival Apache.

mysuffering
Posted by frase @ 22:33 on 16-01-2006
So I've been fairly bored this evening. Too tired to do anything productive, too hot to just go to bed. Already done the rounds about 50 times today so! I decided I would do some adventuring and see a few of my friends' pages on myspace.
Deja vu! What year am I in? I can't tell! I *think* it's somewhere in the mid 2000s, but my eyes and my ears are telling me otherwise. Everywhere I look, horrible page layouts, tables everywhere, terrible colour themes and contrast (note: red on green does NOT make a nice effect!) and midi jingles, just to add that jolly, festive touch. Or some crappy emo band.
And animated gifs! God help us! It's the 1990s all over again!
But despite the horribleness of what I was experiencing, I was mesmerised and unable to click away! Page after vision-distorting page of random crap noone really cares about, emo whining which people care even less about, and way too much sexual innuendo from teenage girls. Oh, and did I mention the horrible colours and animated gifs? Sheesh kebab!
Before long, though, common sense got the better of me and I retreated, a little worse for wear but able to sort myself out and think through my mistakes. Okay... where did it all go wrong? 30 minutes ago I was happily enjoying my evening after a big day working QCB in the morning and SCA in the afternoon. Now I have a splitting headache, can't thing straight, and feel really dirty.
Oh yes... myspace.com. Well, I had I fair idea before, but now I know for sure. myspace is the spawn of Satan*. I hereby resolve to continue my denouncement of the abomination that is myspace.com - more fervently than ever before. And I shall also never visit a myspace page for any reason ever again. Not even Rivers' myspace. NOT EVEN 311's!!! I'm that serious!
So, that's that. IF you want a website, come and talk to me. I'll host one FREE for any of my friends, and you can bet your bottom dollar that whatever you end up with on said website, it will be far less hazardous to your friends' health (and your own) than myspace.
Rant over. I need to ingest 1000mg of paracetamol, post haste!
t
*myspace.com isn't actually the spawn of Satan. Gotta love no free speech :)

haha yeah... for some reason, I always pronounced QTAC as 'attack' with a 'qu' instead of an 'a'. Just appealed to me for some reason.
And it is that time of year! First round of uni offers!
Scuba got in on his 1st preference: CSE @ UQ! Well done bro, and I hope you're ready for a LOT of maths and several years of minimal contact with members of the opposite sex.
Righto... well I'll just wait until I hear from a few more people what exciting offers they got!

Blogurk!
Posted by frase @ 14:16 on 12-01-2006
Yesterday what a good day. I spent many hours furiously programming and at the end of the day, Blogurk 0.4 milestones had been reached. A version bump and we were there.
It's only really just now that I see how far the project has come, and how close we are to something that could be called 'complete' from a 'you can install it and use it and it works' perspective. Which is pretty exciting. The only milestone set for 0.5 is the installer, which scuba has started, although there are several API additions to be made yet, but the important stuff is there (enough of it to warrant the bump).
0.6 brings the adminstration interface; incidentally, a sizable chunk of that is done, since I was really getting fed up with executing queries directly. The interface is a placeholder for something a little more elegant (rather utilitarian at the moment) but the mechanism is there (for the bits that are done... I estimate about half of what needs to be done), and it *is* elegant... in most places :P
So, with 0.6 being the target for the end of February, I can honestly say that we're going to make it... hopefully :P 0.6 will be the first public release, and the first essentials-complete version.
Wow... there's so much more I have to blab on about regarding Blogurk, but a lot of it isn't really finalised or at a point where I can say anything specific, so I guess that's all I say about that today.

housesitting
Posted by frase @ 11:02 on 09-01-2006
Well, I'm housesitting for a few days so hmmm... there isn't a great deal to do except watch movies and much around with Gemma (the dog - but she's fairly old and usually not terribly excitable to that's kind of a dead end). On the upside, there's airconditioning and I also brought my laptop so I can always do a bit of work.
For now though, I'm really hungry and I would go get something to eat but instead, I'm here, deliberating on what I'm actually going to do today. And the answer to that may not be far off as I've just got MSN up and running and so now interactive communication with other human beings may take place.
...aaah fiddlesticks, not many people on. Except Steve Moore which is pretty rad so that makes up for the lack of other people :)
Well I'm done here for now. I still have no idea what I'm going to do or when I'm going to eat, but I'm sure that will sort itself out in time.
Also, I'm back in the google top ten (again), which is cool.

Hello 2006!
Posted by frase @ 12:54 on 04-01-2006
Well, it's 2006. 2005 was quite a year; it was a hard year, but it was a good year. I hope you enjoyed/appreciated the rather long list of '2005 in Ten Words or Fewer' responses - I'm going to make it an annual tradition except I might tweak it on a year-by-year basis. How did 2006 compare to your expectations? 2007 in exactly one word? Pick a number between 723 and 1098 that you feel best describes your 2008...?
Who knows what zany ideas I will come up with??!?!?!
Anyhow, there's a lot to look forward to in 2006. Blogurk is well and truly steaming along, and we're on track for 0.6 by the end of the holidays, which was the aim.
Also on the horizon for 2006 is PHP 6 - I've just been reading a (very long) developer meeting's minutes, and I have to say there's a lot of things to get excited about. Among other things, APC (Alternative PHP Cache) is going to become part of the core distribution (!), magic_quotes is being killed off (thank goodness), and namespaces are under consideration. And of course, there's Unicode support; that's the biggest deal to me for now, as I'm not really sure how it will affect me, but obviously things will become clearer in time. In summary, it's promising stuff.
On the non-technical front, I'm also looking forward to seeing Rivers develop and grow in awesome ways over the next 12 months. The format is changing somewhat, for the better I believe, but of course there will be an adjustment period. Either way, Red (now officially the youth pastor - woo!) is taking the ministry in the direction God wants; of this I am quite sure, so it should be an awesome year!
And then there's uni. As much as I'd like my holidays to last forever, I only have another 8 weeks so I'd better enjoy them as much as possible, because after that it's back for another 9 months of social-life-obliterating, sleep-depriving study of engineering. Still, three years down, two to go - and I'm expecting this year to be somewhat less opressive than the last 12 months have been. Let's hope my expectations are met.
So, that's my anticipatory (is that a word?) post for 2006. Bring it On!
