shameless plugs updated

I was bored this morning so I decided to slim down the 'shameless plug' section of the sidebar. All the pictures changed except the Apache and FreeBSD, and of course you may notice a new shameless plug as well - for Camino. Though I don't know how many people that will affect since I'm the only Mac user I know...
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for the FreeBSD Foundation to start using their new logo. It's rather a very pretty logo and I can't wait for some promo material that uses it, but afaik they're still doing copyright checks and whatnot... hopefully shouldn't be too much longer. If you can't wait until then, or are actually interested (hmmm...), check out the winning entry from the logo competition.
Also, I bloody well wish someone would come up with some better promo material for Apache. *refers to that lovely blocky gif in the sidebar*

Short MediaWiki URLs - a more versatile approach

This is a short HOWTO for extremely short MediaWiki URLS without such limitations as 'no dot' or 'known extension' assertions. mod_rewrite is required for this method (Apache httpd only).
In httpd.conf or .htaccess:

And that's it. This allows you to use basically anything as your article title except where the beginning of your article title matches a directory on the filesystem, including the trailing slash (so calling your article 'skins' would be acceptable; 'skins/*' would not be however).
I developed this method because I found other methods too restrictive because of the assertions made (no dots in your article titles...? come on!). Obviously there are still limitations with this method but they are far more obscure!

two universal truths

1) Backup often, because sooner or later you're going to need to restore your precious data. Whether it's something disasterous and horrible, or something stupid you did (more likely, and certainly my experience tonight), it pays to backup regularly and thoroughly.
2) Napolean Dynamite is a whole lot funnier the second time you watch it.
To explain point 1 further, I had finished a fair chunk of work on Blogurk this evening, committed it, and was going to wipe out the contents of the test directory on the webserver, and replenish it with fresh, updated code (this is the normal procedure).
Well, after I exported the latest version, there we no visible changes in the output, which was strange. Oh yes, that's nice. I wiped out frase.id.au by accident, instead of the test directory. This whole site... gone.
So that's that. Backup often, watch Napolean Dynamite two times.

So anyway, was at Moronfield doing the last of my Christmas shooping this avo.
On the way back down to the carpark, it just so happened that the 'up into the shops' escalator (one of those moving walkway ones, without steps) was stationary.
The down one was working though. And as I descended, I couldn't help but shake my head and laugh at the (quite large) crowd of people assembled at the bottom, wondering how the hell they were going to get to the shops.
It wasn't blocked. It was just STOPPED! It's about a 20m walk, and not remotely steep. And yet, the crowd of dumbfounded Christmas shoppers just stood there.
I could hardly believe my eyes...

Bagurk vs Waaaffles!

Well, the first season confrontations resulted in one win to Bagurk and a draw in the second match.
But now, in the second season, things have changed. Mainly the teams. Both sides have new players and some have even switched! So it's anyone's guess really.
Can Waaaffles pull out the stops and come up with an upset tonight? Bagurk hasn't lost a match so far this season; not too sure about Waaafles though.
Either way, the result shall be known but a few hours from now.
However, Waaaffles definitely have one thing going against them: I have new shoes! MAGIC shoes!!! MUAHAHAHAHA....

Well... let's say you want to have a script that will output in a charset of the users choosing. ISO-8859-1, UTF-8, UTF-16, whatever. Okay, no biggie. Jam it through an iconv output buffer and you're cooking with gas.
Or you want to compress the output? Again, no problem there. the zlib handler will manage that for you and output the right headers for you too, as a special treat!
Both at the same time? What a brain-explodingly frustrating endeavour that was.
But it finally works... even though the whole thing is wrapped in a mysterious third output buffer that magically appears (and won't go away) and doesn't actually do anything.
Anyhoo, that's output control taken care of. Authentication was tested a few days ago with promising results - it doesn't quite do what it's meant to do yet (not least of all because there's no facility for logging out or actually doing anything once you're logged in) but it's getting there; the class itself certainly appears to be working properly.

months of hard work... and finally some results!

About half an hour ago, I conducted the first large(ish) scale test of Blogurk.
And... it works. Aside from one visibility glitch, the database objects worked exactly as expected, and script runs to completion (not that the script itself is 'complete') without error, generating intelligible (although not particularly useful, other than to know that it works) output from a formatter 'theme' script.
In summary, the infrastructre is there and the important parts work as expected. Tomorrow I'll test sessions, and do more comprehensive testing of the database objects.
But yeah... IT WORKS!!!

well, now that the new family computer is humming along nicely, I completely disassembled the old one for a good cleanout before I set it up for it new, ultra-important duty.
The heatsink was absolutely chockers with dust so I decided it would be smart to remove it and give it a good clean.
And everything was going nicely until the CPU (1.7GHz PGA478 Northwood Celeron) came out, stuck to bottom of the heatsink.
Hmm... well no biggie. I figured it was bound to happen to me one day, sooner or later. So I got a screwdriver and gently prised it off. Of course, the moment I nudged it, all grip suddenly vanished and it fell to the table, hitting it on an angle and bending a number of pins.
Hmm... well no biggie. I figured it was bound to happen to me one day, sooner or later. So I got my finest pair of tweezers and gently straightened the bent pins as best as I could see. It didn't go into the socket at first, but a bit of gentle encouragement saw it fit in snugly.
Of course, the whole computer is still in pieces as I was out of isopropyl and thus, the CPU and heatsink have not yet been reunited. I got some this avo before I went to work though, so I think I'll go do that now.

64-bitness

Well, I set up the new computer today.
Whatever problems there may have been with Windows XP x64, they have certainly been ironed out by now. Installation (including driver installation to get all your hardware happenang, and installation of all the essential programs) was absolutely no easier or harder than 32-bit Windows.
The only problem I encountered was with the audio codec (Realtek 880) but of course, if you want audio, you have to install drivers regardless of word size, and once I found the correct driver the problem no longer exist, so I can hardly say a bad word about the OS.
32-bit and 64-bit native apps are working in harmony, side by side. I'll be looking forward to seeing how the 64-bit version of 7-zip performs, and whether there's an appreciable speedup in compression and/or decompression with any of the popular algorithms.
Claire's got The Sims 2 up and running now, so she's happy (again, no problems whatsoever. WoW64 works an absolute treat). And I'm happy... I have a 1.7GHz Celeron at my disposal now, and I'm pretty damn sure I already know what I'll be using that for. Oh yes... you'd better believe I'm heralding the return of srcds55!
Kudos to Redmond for pulling 64-bit off! Not that you would have expected them to not - but I really am finding it difficult to express just how splendididly everything went. I'm quite amazed, really.

exciting new technological experiences

Well, we're upgrading the family computer, and once again (perhaps to the surprise of some), we're going Intel. Why? Because they're cheap. Sure, you can get AMD Seprons on the cheap, but until PGA939 Semprons arrive, you're stuck on the obsoleted PGA754, and probably with AGP as well.
So, the decision was made. LGA775 Celeron D, 2.8GHz, EM64T. My first experience with a 64-bit processor. And my first experience with LGA775.
LGA775 was surprisingly pleasant and easy to use. I was quite cautious about the pins on the motherboard but overall, the system works well and you'd have to be pretty stupid or unlucky to stuff it up. HSF installation was a cinch; definitely the easiest HSF installation I've ever had to do, and not once did it feel like I was putting the precious heart of the computer in danger.
The 64-bitness works well. We still haven't backed up the data off the old HDD before reformatting, so obviously there wasn't a whole lot I could do, but I downloaded the Ubuntu amd64 live cd and had a muck around. Obviously, running the thing from CD negates the possibility of perception of any performance improvement... but I have a hot little copy of Windows XP Professional x64 that's been burning a whole in my cd wallet for a little while so now seems like the perfect time to put it to use.
In the end, if my little experiment doesn't work out (driver or software compatibility issues or whatever) then of course, we can just roll back to the old copy of XP Pro (32-bit), but I'm very interested in nutting it out and having a full experience of 64-bit Windows, in order to evaluate whether I should take the x64 path when I upgrade atomsk next year.
So that's LGA775 and 64-bit processing. What else? Oh yes, PCI-Express. Well... PCI-E is nice. What can I say? It's PCI... Express! Same crap, different slot :P
So there you go. A threefold technological leap of faith... that went sublimely.

The plane trip was quite uneventful. I spent some time programming but mostly just slept, watched movies, and ate. We got in about 5:30 local time, and were out of the airport by 6. Amazingly, we didn't attract so much as an X-Ray or anything in immigration - they just waved us straight through, which was quite surprising.
So, we caught a cab to our apartment, set up camp, and went out for dinner. It was yummy. And that was Sunday.
Monday... hmmm what did we do on Monday. Sheesh kebab I'm forgetting already. Well, on Monday we probably just went around, and saw stuff, and went shopping. That's about it. I'm sure I had a lot of fun, but I can't really remember that much. Oh yeah... I went to Funan (the IT mall!) on Monday as well, and bought some stuff. Imagine Strathpine; stack six of them up and fill it with computer stores. That's Funan. Freakin. Incredible.
Tuesday: we went to the Kranji War Memorial, which was... a war memorial - pretty sobering. A lot of Grandad's fellow diggers fell in the Battle of Singapore; and many more as POWs at Changi and on the railroad. We also went to the Changi Chapel and Museum... I can't remember if that was on the same day but I think it was...
Wednesday... Dad and I cruised around checking stuff out; Mum went with Claire. Went to Sim Lim Square (like Funan). Died and went to heaven again. Went to a net cafe. Slept in the afternoon. Anticipated unwellness in the following days.
And that's about all I can remember. Sheesh. Singapore - awesome place. Can't wait to go back!

Well, I have successfully rolled over from fortune to fortune2 (as you'll see at the bottom of the page!). Everything seems to be working fine now; had some issues with both blogurk.org and the blogurk wiki (now at http://wiki.blogurk.org/) but everything seems to be working just fine now.
The move took place sooner than expected; I was waiting for PHP 5.1.1 to make it into the ports but alas, I could hold on no longer and went with PHP 5.0.5 which is, evidently, working just fine.
I haven't checked the numbers but I have done the frase.id.au benchmark run... we're looking at something on the order of 10 times faster, which is more than I could have hoped for and very satisfying. PHP 5.1 is set to bring further performance improvements so I may just hold off a little longer and do more runs once it's in the tree.
And now, I must sleep.

I've started processing the photos from Singapore - 245 all up, although quite a few of them are throwouts. I'll be updating earlier posts with a few of the better ones, and if fact I've already done Fort Canning Gate which is in Recap Part 1. Yesterday I had a very productive day setting up fortune2, the wireless access point, and giving the office a huge clean. I was at Buyequip in the morning and they were selling double headed computer power leads and I immediately thought, "WHERE HAVE THESE BEEN ALL MY LIFE" and grabbed two (should have got more but that was enough for now) for $2.50 each - a steal imho. Anyhow, I immediately planned a rearrangement and cable tidyup in the office.
I was up until past 3 this morning getting everything sorted but the results speak for themselves; I have eliminated a four point power board and a five port switch from the setup! With the wireless now in play, I don't need extra cables for the laptop and I have only one cable running across the floor going directly to atomsk. I am definitely considering getting a wireless card for ol' atomsk to, so I can get rid of that and then people will stop complaining about slash tripping over the cable!
The whole room looks very nice at the moment and although there is still a bit of tidying to be done, overall the improvement is dramatic.
Anyhow, back to the topic... I did a census of the computers in the household. Twelve... I repeat, twelve functional computers. This includes both laptops (as Dad's now lives at home and Mum uses it every so ofted), all the servers (including illumination who is out of play until I actually need a mailserver), two other boxen just sitting in my room which were previously dedicated folders and Uncle Sandy's birthday present computer, which he'll get this weekend and so it's really more like 11 but hey... they include foreigners in Australian censi so it still counts!
The new shed will be getting power at some point; when it does, I'll make damn sure they run a cat5 out there too so I can haul all the lazy boxen out there and put them to work ;)

well, I installed my Linksys A/P last night and I'm testing it out this morning.
I get full signal strength pretty much everywhere in the house, which is pretty rad! I'm in my room at the moment... I'm honestly quite surprised by how good this is... even though the A/P is pissing me off because I can't access the web configuration to change the advanced settings.
Oh well... at least it works - and work well it does!
