ah well...
had a 10am start at the good ol' University o' Queensland this morning. First up was a two hour lecture for CSSE3000 - Digital Systems Design I. Two hour lectures can be quite painful but hopefully this one won't be too bad... in fact I'm really looking forward to this one. Finally I'm getting into the meat of my degree and not a moment too soon! All I can say is, thank God I don't have any more maths (I hope not anyway!).
My other lecture today was COMP3300 - Operating Systems. It looks to be quick a cracker and the lecturer was moderately rad to boot. He walked in to the lecture wearing the second most psychedelic/mesmerising shirt I have ever seen. It was so colourful and swirly it was almost beyond comprehension and certainly defies description in words.
I'm only doing three subjects this semester and the other one (first lecture is tomorrow I think) is COMP3501 - Human Computer Interaction I. I'm not 100% what this one is going to be like but I imagine it will be quite interesting. I'll find out soon enough of course.

I made some changes to the stylesheet this morning - the site now displays properly on Gecko engined browsers and Opera. There are a few niggling glitches in MSIE's rendering of some pages (regarding the margin between the footer and the page content) however I'll put that down to IE, since it still works properly most of the time and I've finally nailed it for these far more standards compliant browsers. Besides, it's not like you're going to get the right experience with IE anyway, given its inability to handle alpha transparency and incorrect implementation of the background-attachment:fixed; directive.

just played my best round of counterstrike ever :)
29 kills, 7 deaths.
how much longer shall it be before i break the 30 mark? I do not know...
I remember only months ago just after I took up counterstrike thinking, "how in God's great name can people be this good at counterstrike?!"
Well, practice definitely helps. It's still a humbling experience when you realise that although your score may be pretty good, you've got a ways to reach the level of skill of the one sitting above you on the scoreboard at 54 kills...

today I rebuilt the 'links' engine - although there have been no changes on the client end all the links to external sites (which is so far just what's in the sidebar) and associated information are stored in the database, and dynamically generated. the motivation behind this is threefold -
first of all I have great control over the formatting of the output HTML code by dynamically generating the code rather than using server-side includes
second, it will be easier to add, remove or modify links as they're all specified in the same manner, with certain parameters determining when/how they're used, and it only needs to be done in the one place (the database) for any links on the site
finally, when I code the 'links' page (which should happen soon now that I've sorted this stuff out) it will be quick and easy to do - and once again I'll only need to change the information in the database to change anything about the links themselves.

Added a hit counter this avo (in the footer) as well as make a few streamlining changes to the code - and some changes in anticpation of a feature I'll probably be adding tomorrow (time permitting). At the moment the hit counter does track sessions or anything, so every access to the home page will increment it. Visiting pages other than the home page won't have any effect on the count though...

todays project consisted of downgrading the mysql backend on fortune to version 4.1.10 (from version 5.0.2). Note to self: never, EVER use an alpha build on a production machine. It's just not worth it!
Anyhoo, the little bit of testing I've done so far indicates that all is well, which is comforting.
Hmm what else is news...
I bought a new fan today, to replace the old one that burned out the other day. After many years of use (not sure how many exactly but it's probably at least as old as I am) it just gave up the ghost. It's been unbearable in here the past few days, but the new fan is running very nicely so it's all good now :)

bushfire shmooshfire! I'm sure more people died today in road rage incidents or committed suicide in the traffic chaos that resulted than would have been incinerated by a wee little grassfire in the wetlands.
And don't try and pull the 'smoke reduces visibility' card either! That smoke plume was going STRAIGHT UP! I saw it with my own eyes. I had LOTS of time to look at it while stationary in my car!
Sheesh kebab. The last thing you want when you've had a lousy day doing the run is to sit in bumper to bumper traffic for two and a half hours. What a bloody joke!
I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now... what a horrendous day!

I finished half-life 2 a short while ago. Great game, no doubt about it, but Doom3 is still fresh in my mind and frankly I must say that I honestly found Doom3 a far more engaging experience. HL2 definitely wins in the visuals stakes though. The source engine really works a treat, and the physics were better as well - a much higher level of interactivity was on offer in HL2 and that was definitely something the game had going for it.
On the down side, HL2 was much shorter than Doom3, and far easier. But considering I basically only bought HL2 for CS:Source, I'm definitely not going to complain. It was a great game and I well and truly got my money's worth.
Oh, and the ending SUCKED!

motorshow highlights #6 - Torana TT36

Undoubtedly the highlight of this years motorshow for me was Holden's new Torana concept, the TT36. Powered by a 280kW twin turbo 3.6L Alloytec engine (hence, TT36), this beast sports 20" alloys, a panoramic glass roof, and an immaculate white leather interior, among other things.
Now, I really, really like the look of this vehicle. Yes, I did notice its hot pink exterior - I think it looks good. Yes, I'm quite aware that it's little more than a glorified Vectra. But I really like it. As an overall package it works very well, and I particularly like the VT-esque rear light cluster. As mentioned before the interior is very attractive and the layout is top notch. Honestly, my photos don't do the TT36 justice - it has to be seen first hand to get a proper idea of just how nice this vehicle is.
One thing that did surprise me was that it's only a four seater, however that could very easily be rectified - it's still only concept of course but I reckon there's a good chance it will go into production, especially with the amount of attention it's getting.
And if/when it does... I might just get one :)

A couple of random exhibits here in my penultimate motorshow highlights post.
The toyota pavillion was largely void of interesting things, however one thing that did catch my eye was a demonstration of the inner workings of the hybrid fuel/electric Prius. I have a love/hate relationship with the Prius. Love because it's an awesome piece of technology and hate because I nearly got run over by one in a carpark a while ago - damn things are dead silent!
Dare I say, the real thing probably contains far less perspex and far fewer flashing lights, but it was very interesting seeing how it all operates and fits together.
And I'll throw in a pic of the Lamborghini Gallardo for good measure :)

someone once asked me what car I would get if I had an unlimited amount of money. For some reason, I said 'Bentley'. I'm not sure what it is about Bentleys that makes me like them so much... but I do. I guess if it's good enough for the Queen of England, it's good enough for me.
The Bentley Continental GT is a twin turbo, 6L V12 coupe. It is rated at an amazing 552hp and can produce a ridiculous 650Nm of torque at 1600rpm. Also, it doesn't look the slightest bit dorky or 'fuddy-duddy', which is a welcome break from Bentley tradition. In fact, it looks really really good; sporty and aggressive yet unmistakably a Bentley. It is also LARGE, capable of seating four comfortably.
All yours for only $385000!

I'm not sure if it's an interest other people have, but for some reason the wheels are possibly the most interesting part of a vehicle to me. I guess it might have something to do with the fact that without them, a car is useless. It would be all very well to have the most powerful, souped up engine around, but unless you have wheels you'd have a lot of difficulty putting that power to the ground...
Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of wheels at the motor show, averaging four per car and two per bike. Some wheels were very uninteresting and some were truly extravagant, but I decided that I would present what I thought were the two most interesting wheels at the show.
First up we have the wheels of some Proton - I can't remember what model it was but frankly who cares, since the wheels were the only part worth photographing (and that in itself surprised me). I was stunned by the elegant simplicity of the five spoke design - although the balance is kind of ruined by the fact that it's attached to a four stud hub. Nonetheless, for some reason I really liked the wheels of this car.
The title of my favourite wheel from the show, however, belongs to the new Mitsubishi Spyder concept. I'm not sure whether to call it a five spoke or ten spoke wheel but either way the design appeals to me greatly, particularly the 'flowing' or 'warped' (I dunno, is there a proper word for it?) spokes. The dark grey wheels complement the bright red paint job and definitely enhance the overall appearance of the Spyder.

without a doubt the tiniest and silliest looking car on the road, I had always wondered about the engine of the smart fortwo. just how tiny and pathetically weak was this engine? was it situated at the front or rear of the vehicle? et cetera. now I finally got my chance to see the engine up close - and I really was surprised - it was smaller than I ever imagined! The smart glamour girl (not that there's much glamour in being associated with the smart motor company) was kind enough to appear in one of my photographs.

On monday afternoon, Ray, Lax, Adam and myself headed in to town to check out this year's Brisbane International Motor Show. Needless to say I filled my 512MB memory card with hundreds of pics of the sweetest (and weirdest) rides - it took me bloody AGES to sort them all :)

we had a bike show at work on saturday. needless to say there were a LOT of very nice and insanely loud/powerful bikes there; among them Brett Stevens' drag bike (along with Brett Stevens himself) and the beast in the photo below. It was the Australian entry in some Discovery Channel Australia vs the US vs the Brits 'build the most outrageously high powered and outstanding looking chopper you can' competition. We met some of the people involved in the project to discover that they'd recently turned down a $200000 offer for it pending an offer from a collector in the states. Oh, and by the way, it's 135hp at the rear wheel :)

hurrah! I finally finished Doom3 a few minutes ago! I must say that the closing cinematic was a little disappointing (I would have expected something a little more substantial) but I guess the means justified the end because it was one hell fun game! I might go see what mods are available for it now - although I still have halflife 2 to finish yet, as I'm only about halfway through that at the moment.
