To the best of my knowledge it is all working as expected, although I am quite aware some of bugs I have in my fancy preg substitution code. Nevertheless, commenting WORKS, so you can now all leave comments about my zany adventures in computing (and beyond!).

Well, RiversLAN April'05 is over and it was a resounding success!
Started about midday Saturday with me, Steve Moore and Scuba; Seeley, and a few others showed up later that afternoon/evening and then it was lots of CS:S until the wee hours of the morning (along with a bit o' Zero Hour and, of course, Worms World Party, with a few other games thrown in for good measure). Lippiatt had to work, which was a real bummer, but we had a few others drop in for varying periods of time which was pretty rad.
Sunday avo saw Quinno and Patch join the par-tay and they promptly forced everyone to install their h4x0r version of CS:S so that they could join in the fun... but it was worth it :D The mighty Ali also showed up Sunday afternoon and pwned us all with his leet sniping skills.
There were antics aplenty in the Steve Moore camp, who's incredible laptop could run CS at an incredible 2 or so frames per second; in one frame you'd see an enemy popping around the corner and in the next frame they're gone... and you're dead on the ground! I'm also kicking myself for not bringing my notebook to write down all the hilarious things Steve said.
I also got photographs of Quinno doing a crazy dance but it seems that at some point during my rather short sleep he nicked my camera and erased them, and unfortunately I hadn't yet saved them to my computer. I was rightfully upset so they called me a waaambulance... but I'm over it now ;)
We called it quits around midday, packed up and headed off to sleep, eat, shower, and do other things. I'm extremely tired and heading to bed shortly, so that's this lan report over and done with. Here's to the next RiversLAN, which I'll probably organise for the winter holidays so more people can come!

well... still haven't gotten around to coding the rest of the commenting system. this past few days I've been doing lots of computer-related things (not that that's unusual) in preperation for this weekends lan, which starts today.
On wednesday I bought a new CPU (Sempron 2400+) and mobo (Asus A7V600 KT600) from a chap on the southside (second hand but in good condition and a steal for the price I paid). Unfortunately, for some reason, the thing locks just after the post, and it's impossible even to get into CMOS setup - I tried everything I could think of, but after some pretty solid diagnostics, I have concluded that either it needs a new BIOS ROM chip (or the current one professionally reflashed) or the mobo is completely fubar.
If I'm lucky I might be able to sort something out with the guy I bought it from, but if not, well it's only $20 bucks or so I lost when you take into account the retail price for the CPU, so life goes on.
It's a bit sad though, since I was planning to use it as a dedicated games server for the lan, but as I'm unable to do that anymore, I scrounged up the best unused hardware I had lying around and installed a Source DS on it.
It's a P3 600MHz with 64MB of RAM, and it lags when one client is connected, so it doesn't quite lend itself well to the purpose for which it was frantically put together... but it'll make a nice DHCP server ;)

I found myself installing Claire's new head unit and reinstalling Windows of late (my Windows install decided to go south this afternoon), so I haven't gotten around to doing any more work on the site. Probably won't have a chance until Thursday now, and by then I'll probably be in full swing preperations for the big lan this weekend.
So... it could be a little while yet my friends...

Well, if you are reading this you have probably noticed that I have finally gotten around to some work on the commenting system. I've been doing some preliminary coding and testing over the past few days. Tonight I made the necessary changes to the database and worked on the interface; unfortunately it's far from complete and it doesn't actually do anything yet, but I'm hoping to knock the rest of it off tomorrow avo, or later next week at the latest. And then... you can all leave comments :)
I've made another slight change. The counter code has been updated and it now uses cookie based sessions, so it doesn't update the counter on every access of the home page. I did this partly so I could have a more accurate counter, and partly because I needed to learn how to use sessions, since the commenting system uses them.
In other, site-unrelated news, I saw Hostage (with Bruce Willis) the other night. I was pleasantly surprised; it was a really enjoyable thriller and comes with a hearty recommendation from me (not that that really counts for much, given my taste in motion pictures).

I would like to tell you about a strange phenomenon I experience from time to time.
I was telling some of my friends about this last night - they just laughed at me and said I was crazy (...maybe I am), but this is a real thing that happens to me from time to time.
I have named this phenomenon 'teflon feet'.
Basically, at seemingly random times and without any apparant cause, my feet will, for a day or two, become extremely slippery. This has it's advantages and disadvantages. For example, socks go on and off with incredible ease - all you have to yank on the end and it's off!
You can also slide on carpet really well but this, in my opinion, is a bad thing, as inevitably I end up slipping over or crashing into a wall and making a complete arse of myself.

By crikey! I just got out of my HCI midsem, and let me tell you: it was the most writing intensive exam I have had since being at uni! I had forgotten how much it hurts to write non-stop for a hour!
The outer edge of my left hand is thoroughly inked, which is also something I don't see much of these days, given that most of my work is either on computers or consists of short but highly technical solutions to technical problems, rather than lengthy, wishy-washy analyses of loosely specified interaction design tasks.
But on the plus side, I think I probably did alright :)
And another positive - they FINALLY installed Firefox on the library computers! No more putting up with clunky ol' Netscape for tabbed browsing. Hoorah!

First of all, some good news!
I have found a solution to my dilemma! I can force the desired render in gecko by wrapping the relevant header tags in a <div>! I'm kicking myself that I didn't think of doing it before but it works properly now so I am very happy and will start coding the comments engine tomorrow :D
Nevertheless, it's not all that good when you have to code a hackish solution to work your way around a bug, however this is basically the first instance of that on my site, so I suppose I can't really complain.
In other news, I would like to announce that I am now a folder, proudly folding for MozillaZine Folding Team. I've completed three work units in the past few days and am currently folding various proteins on Atomsk, Heracles, Office and Fortune. MozillaZine has just made it into the top 200 and is currently at 188th, and we're very quickly climbing the ranks...

Well, I've been doing a bit of backend work on the site lately. I'm proud to announce (not that it will have any effect on anyone besides me... well - it might once I implement a comments system) that I have implemented a bbcode-esque system to the backend, in order to specify formatting with special tags, and allowing me to include characters that would otherwise break the page in my posts.
And on the matter of a commenting system: in terms of the actual engine it really is only just around the corner, but at the moment I'm quite reluctant to put anything on the site, because that would mean that I either have to:
a) make some changes to the layout of the site and chuck whatever dialog I want regarding comments at the bottom of each post, or
b) throw it in the whitebar at the top of each blog entry, float it right and endure ghastly misalignments in gecko based browsers whenever there are images in any of my posts.
This bug is pretty annoying and can be seen (with browsers using the Gecko engine only - that's Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape and Camino, among others) in the archive pages of February (and sometimes March - so far they are the only months with images) after images occur in the entries. It would seem that it definitely has something to do with image loading as aside from the fact that it only occurs below them, but subsequent renders of the affected pages from cache come up correctly; changing the text size and resizing the browser window also make the problem go away. A cache flush and a page reload will reproduce the bug, however.
I submitted the bug to Bugzilla (289406) so hopefully we'll know a little more about it sometime soon. I was unable to reproduce the problem in Mozilla 1.7.2 (Gecko 20040803), so it also seems to be a fairly new problem - hopefully one that is rectified soon (although I'm sure that there are more important bugs to be worked on than this one).

So, if I'm really lucky and there's a quick resolution to this problem, there should be a commenting system here in no time at all! However, unless something happens basically overnight, I'll probably just sit back and ponder the situation a little more. CHAPTER ONE: THE EXAM
It all started very early this morning, as I had a digital design exam at 8am. I hitched a ride in with the old man and got there with hour to spare. Studied up, revised last year's midsem exam, and generally felt pretty good about what was coming up.
I went in to the exam room, had a massive brain fart, and emerged 90 minutes later somewhat perplexed at why I didn't even attempt the third question and also at the fact that I had mixed NMOS and PMOS transistors in ways that just won't work in a CMOS design question...
Of course I'll certainly pass. Half the marks were for a state machine design which went quite well... but yeah - not terribly looking forward to the result.
Anyhoo it was only worth 25% (still quite a bit) so hopefully it won't have too major an impact...
CHAPTER TWO: RANDOM ACTIVITIES
After the exam, I headed to the library for two hours and wasted them on the internet, posting it up on the many assorted forums I post on.
Once I had finished up there, I headed up to the refec and bought a steak, bacon and cheese pie from the bakery (which only opened recently - much to my delight as there is now something more tasty and wholesome to consume than chips and gravy from the refec). It was a delicious pie and cheesier than usual but it took me a while to eat because it was so hot!
I headed off to my HCI tute and grabbed a handful of some new Cadbury chocolate bar they were doing a promo for on the way. Wednesday is promo day at uni, and I'm always delighted to receive free items of both the edible and non-edible variety.
I consumed four of these Cadbury 'Boost' bars in quick succession, and reminisced of the time I drank four promo 'Dare Rush!' (a heavily caffeinated iced coffee drink) cans in quick succession, soon to discover the warning on the side of the can stating "WARNING: CONSUME NO MORE THAN TWO PER DAY". I had no trouble at all staying awake during my HCI lecture that day, and lots of trouble getting to sleep that night.
CHAPTER 3: THIS BUS HAS TERMINATED
After my HCI lecture, I headed off (as one does after the completion of all uni-related activities for the day). I got on the 407 and was joined soon after by a jolly fellow who was very conversation, and well, I wasn't really in the mood for a chat at first but soon after we were chatting away like we had known each other for yonks!
His name was Brent and he was a business/arts student who was in his first year at UQ but had done one year at Griffith already. We chatted all the way into town and then for a little while after before we headed our seperate ways. I hope I shall run into him again as it really made riding the ol' public transport a lot more interesting than usual.
I grabbed a sub, checked the time and decided the bus would be the go, rather than the train, since I was heading back to QCB to hitch a ride home with the old man. Unfortunately, but bus I normally take had just left and another wasn't coming for a short minute, so I headed one stop down and inspected the route chart there. What luck! A bus that actually goes right into Commercial Road! Then I looked at the bus that was already there. What luck! That's the bus! I couldn't believe it so I checked the charts again to make sure, then jumped on, expecting to be at the office in no time at all.
Only problem was... the bus terminated at New Farm Park. Somewhere along the way I had made a boo boo and well, it certainly could have been worse, but New Farm Park is quite a way from QCB. But I had time to spare, so what they hey, I walked it!
I was very confused as to why this had all happened. It had been such a strange, random day, and now this had happened! Not that it was upsetting or anything - just very strange. It was utterly perplexing and almost the whole time I was walking the New Farm backstreets I was thinking about why this all might have happened...
CHAPTER FOUR: PEACE
Two blocks away from the office - the moment I made it Commercial Road - I got my answer. There before me, straight down the road and out into the distance beyond, was one of the most glorious sunsets I had ever seen.
A big cloud had obscured the sun and glowed bright yellow, while rays of light pierced through the cloud and sliced by its edges, giving it an intense aura. The clear blue sky stretched forward toward the horizion and reddened to a bright orangey-pink all around the cloud.
It truly was a magnificent site and I was totally praising God for it! My crazy, random day culminated in a moment of awe and incredible stillness of heart and mind; a sense of peace and trusting in God that I feel I have been really needing to grasp lately. It all just made sense.

I simply love being finished an assignment days before it is due; having everything working right and having it all submitted early enough so as to claim any possible 'early' bonus. Oh yes, I love it.
It makes me feel good when I look upon all the others frantically trying to get their assignments, not having a clue about it, and knowing that I made the effort *not* to be in that position... even though that's *normally* the position I end up in :/
JLo and I today characterised the 'procrastination algorithm', which goes something like this:
