hi,
here I am, in the labs at uni. I cannot even think straight today. I just cannot work.
I've decided that it would just be best to spend some time reading datasheets and trying to comprehend the skeleton code we've got for this project... either that or do some work for some other subjects.

howdy,
well it's been a good week since I last wrote anything, so I figured I'd give a quick shout out.
Yes, I'm still alive. Uni is consuming a lot of my time but I guess that's to be expected at this point in the semester. Only a few weeks to go before the heat is off which I'm looking forward to.
The nice thing is, I'm seriously not inundated with work, nor am I behind in any of my subjects. I'm pretty busy, but hey, you get that. But this has been and is continuing to be a Good Semester, as per my predictions.
Hmm I don't have much else to say for now. I'm really looking forward to getting some more work done on Blogurk but right now I just don't have the time.
Oh, and I am loving the iPod. Podcasts are awesome. But I'll post about the awesomeness of podcasting some other time.

1.8 times faster :)

Well, I came up with a faster version of my original algorithm this morning. This one is much more likely to get a BIG boost out of cache preloading, but even without it it is an astounding 1.8 times faster on 256*256 (I wasn't expecting anything near that, maybe 1.2 or 1.3)!
So that's that. After the dismal failure last night, I'm happy with that.
Time to run more benchies...
EDIT - that was on corona. for 256*256 on fortune2, 3.5 times faster!
EDIT2 - 1024*1024 on fortune2 is 13.5 times faster!

300 times slower !$#!@&#*!@

right, so it's nearly 2am and I've just spent the last 7 hours or so (not to mention the last few days thinking about it and nutting it out in my head) coding a more efficient version of my large matrix multiplication algorithm.
It took me craploads of scribbling and visualising and solving ridiulous simultaneous equations in order to get all the little bits and pieces that constituted the nitty gritty of my improved algorithm into place. And not so long ago I finished all that and got it working.
And then came the benchmarks. On my (10 by 17) * (17 * 54) sample that I like to run just to verify things are working properly, the new algorithm was 84 times slower.
For two 256 by 256 square matrices, the number blew out to about 300. THREE HUNDRED TIMES SLOWER. Mind you, I *did* expect the new algorithm to be a little slower, but it was specially crafted in order to use cache preloading to speed up execution. But a factor of 300 (and I dare say that number goes even higher for larger computations - not that I'm going to bother finding out) will well and truly negate any speedup cache preloading.
Cache preloading is quite possible with the old version of the algorithm, just much less useful, so now, I guess I'll focus on tweaking that algorithm to make preloading more effective. But for now, I'm going to bed, to sleep away my woes.

Well, Mum and Dad and Claire all went up the island for the long weekend. Jokingly I declared I was going to have a party in their absense.
Then I changed my mind and decided to have a party. So, fraseLAN it was! Hooray for Labour Day (whatever that celebrates).
And a good LAN it was. Still four of us here, in fact, although everyone else is still dead to the world. Well, you get that.
