now that I'm on holidays, I can return to my default nocturnal lifestyle - chillin' in the avo, programming into the wee hours of the morning and sleeping through 'til midday :P
as such, expect lots of things to happen over the next few weeks with the website. you may have noticed a few changes already, although these are mostly superficial. most of the 'big' changes are going to be to the backend (I've basically decided to consider what currently exists a prototype, and rewrite the whole thing based on what I've got, with security, efficiency and portability in mind).
I am, however, seriously considering a new theme for the site... not that the 'outer space' one has outworn its welcome (well, some might think that - I dunno). Even at the dodgy low quality they're at the background images are pretty huge, so I'm running a few things through my mind at the moment. So don't be surprised if the website suddenly turn fluoro pink or something...
You may have noticed that I've upgraded the banner - it's a bit clearer, thinner and smaller now (saved a whole 30K!), meaning now that the largest file in the site interface is the 'dark' background image; hence my intention to do something about that. Also, for the time being, I have embraced frase.homeip.net as my domain name. I couldn't find anything domain names I really liked, so I've stalled all this time, but frase.homeip.net has really grown on me. Rest assured though, if frase.net ever lapses I'll be next in line to grab it ;)
That's about all I wanted to say for now. Once the new backend is complete, I'll port it to the fiftyfive website and get that underway. I'm also gonna throw something together for lax, but of course I need to do the backend first. Won't be long matey :)

aiiiight, so I knocked off exams on Saturday evening, and first thing's first. Let me just say that I have *never* felt this good at the end of a semester. Of course, it might be a different story when I actually see my results, but I'm expecting not. Everything just went really well this semester; 3 subjects is definitely the way to go!
Now - a very exciting thing has happened. Three months ago I ordered 311 Day 2004 - the concert DVD. And IT HAS ARRIVED AT LAST!!!
Truly, awesome doesn't even come close to adequate when describing the content of the DVD (well, DVDs, since it's a bit difficult to put five hours of concert footage on one disc). Aaah it's SO GOOD! I put it on as soon as I got home (about 6:30) and finished up a bit before midnight, and man! Every minute of it was splendid!
So that was that. I'm quite seriously contemplating a trip overseas to be at the next 311 Day, because I've no doubts after watching this DVD that 311 are the best live band in the world, and that the real thing is at least 1024 times better than any film of it.
Anyhoo, moving onto other things, and yesterday was the Atomic Brisbane BBQ Meet v2.5, and a jolly good meet it was! A reasonable turnout, plenty of antics, frisbee in the park, kangaroo sausages - what more can one ask for?! Good times had by all, pics below :)

ah man I am having the BEST evening!
Don't ask me why, because I do have an exam tomorrow, but it is my last one so perhaps I am just looking forward to being freeeeeeeeee again (well, for a month or so; then it's back to uni).
The old man brought home pizza from Gino's this evening and we all just chilled out and watched 'Getting Square' - which I must say is quite a good aussie film; well worth seeing!
Then after that, I'm just chillin' online, doing the rounds and chatting to my homies and homiettes, and CRANKING the music (well, in my headphones anyway). Winamp has selected a most interesting... selection... of songs for me this evening. Cat Empire, RATM, Marcy Playground, BFF. It's all there, it's all good. Couldn't care less about my exam tomorrow. Only need 7% to pass the course and a pass in the exam will guarantee me a 5, which is all I really care for because the subject is gay and subjective, which I thought would be a nice change but it wasn't! I'll stick to non-arts-esque courses from now on.

well, what can I say? 55 vs MCC was, well... a bit of a disaster.
We started off on 55|srcds, but the pings, for some unknown reason, were in the high hundreds! It still makes no sense to me as it handles 6 or 7 connections fine (sub-100) but alas, it was deemed unacceptable (indeed it was) and we moved to HostNetworks.
As if that in itself wasn't bad enough, for some even more inexplicable reason, we had no freakin' rcon on the new server, and thus, no map control! But the concensus was to stay there where the pings were low and so we just decided 'okay, warm up on this map and play the next three'.
Much to my dismay, the next map was cs_italy; 55 conceded that map to MCC at 8 points to their 9 (it was damn close but an oversight on my part saw the map change earlier than expected, thus we took the score as it was). Next up was (urg) de_dust, and the results on that map were very surprising! T's dominated, on what is usually a CT dominated map. Again it was an extremely close battle but MCC won out, taking the victory at 10 points to 9.
So, MCC won. And congratulations to them.
I definitely think we would have won had we played the intended maps (de_inferno, cs_compound and de_dust2) - but I would think that. Either way, what's done is done, and all that's left now is to pick up the pieces and work out something a little more streamlined for the next time we war. Obviously this means a lot more testing of my server (and/or looking for new server options) and some more quality time with the clan, devising ingenious strategies and putting them to the test.
The war was basically a disaster, but it was some damn good CS, and I really look forward to the next time we war with MCC. Things will be a lot more organised next time, I promise :)

WAR!!! 55's first official engagement is a mere two hours away, and things are really heating up! The server is up and last minute checks are going to be run shortly. Tonight's team is Mister_T (that's me), Ali, Steve, Sealy and Doorknob (Tim).
The webserver will be down for the duration of the war (I'll probably drop it at around 6:30) but back up again shortly afterwards.
Also, I reached my 20k point folding milestone this morning! Yay!

Well, I'm here at DANLAN 2005 and whilst I am waiting for my download of the BF2 demo to complete, I figured I would post some random bloggings, as is my custom.
First thing's first: it was a whole week ago now but I still haven't written about it so here it is: the boatcruise wrap!
The boatcruise was good.
Now that that's out of the way, umm... oh yeah - tomorrow is the big day of Halliday wearing a dress to maccas. If you know the guy (or just wanna see something funny) and it is feasible for you to be at Kallangur Maccas at around 8:30 - 9pm tomorrow night, I would suggest you make an effort and get along! If not though, there's surely be photos and videos online within 24 hours, but frankly there's no possible way it will capture the humiliation and you'll be missing out!
Well, that's about it for now. Next week I'll have to actually get stuck into some study, so updates may be scant... I leave you with a few piccies from the boat cruise :)

Well, I finally got around to doing some work on the site itself (it's been a while!) today. I added a system of alerts in the comments system, so that if a user enters the captcha wrong, or fails to enter information in a mandatory field, they'll actually be told what they did wrong, rather than nothing happening and their comment never appearing (seems I learned *something* in HCI).
Also, behold!!! I have added a new section to the site! Look right and you shall see the link to the 'about me' section! (Well, the link was always there but now there's stuff in it!)
There's plenty more to come in that section and I'll just do a bit at a time; I'm in no rush. You'll also see that I removed all the links to parts of the site still under construction (ie, not started). That's something else I learned in HCI. Besides, I'd rather have it be a pleasant surprise when (if???) I add new stuff to the site, as opposed to everybody sitting there wondering "psh, why doesn't this exist yet?"
I've still got plenty of preg bugs to kill but I sorted a few out today, so that's a start.

Let me tell you now, I had a jolly good time Tuesday avo... even all the way up the north side of the bridge Adam was making it known that I was truly screwed, going to be forking out a lot of money to people, and that there was no chance of seeing him in a dress on Sunday night.
Well, he was wrong. As we headed down to the tollgates, he immediately pointed out the centre e-toll lanes and their boomgatelessness. But let me tell you, the expression on his face when I said "okay, now look left - lane one" and he did so - priceless!
The funniest thing I will ever hear in my life: "What... WHAT?!?!. Aaah crap... I think I'm in a bit of trouble."

before I post about the outcome (which was indeed determined yesterday afternoon), I think I should also post about an additional bet made. Saturday night saw a renewed interest in the bet and the determination of the outcome, with everyone again vigorously defending their stance. And let me just say, I was getting an absolute trashing from everyone about it. Adam was going nutso again, and his firey passion spurred him on to make another bet, a new bet. I quote:
"At the E-toll, there's no gates. There is no gates on the E-toll, when you go through. If there is a gate on the E-toll, I will wear a dress and a bra, and a g-string and whatever, on Sunday into Maccas. That is the bet."

the backstory, and how it all happened:
IT was May 13, 2005, and a bunch of us were chilling at Kallangur Maccas after youth, and goodness knows how the topic came up but we started talking about e-toll or the Gateway Bridge, or something...
Now, somewhere along the line I must have mentioned in passing the existance of boomgates on e-toll lanes, which was immediately refuted by most of the other people there. But I was (and still am) adamant. There are gated e-toll lanes, end of story. I pointed out that I didn't know about the middle lanes, since I never go through them, but passionately defended my stance, based upon my experience running for QCB.
Being the runner for QCB usually involved two trips (sometimes more, sometimes less) over the Gateway every day, mainly to Fisherman Island and Morningside, and thus the outer e-toll lanes (the existance of which was also denied) were used. And they have boomgates on them.
At this point I had pretty much everyone against me (including Tracey, the night manager at Maccas). "No boomgates, on ANY of the e-toll lanes!" cried Adam. So that was that.
"I'll bet you fifty bucks there are e-toll lanes with boomgates."
Lax was first taker, then Adam, then Renae, then three other people although I don't exactly remember who... :/ So all up, $300 worth of bets.
The intention was to make a dedicated trip to Gateway as soon as possible to determine teh winnah, but nearly a month has gone by with no conclusion yet reached (of course, that all depends on who you ask). But this afternoon, that all changes. Adam and I are heading down in a few hours and the result shall be known.

bumming around town...

I have taken 'bumming around town' to a new level.
My lecture yesterday avo (last class for the semester, yipee!) went for a mere 30 minutes (two hours normally) so I found myself with four hours to burn before I was meeting Steve for a move (Episode III, naturally). So this is what I did:
First stop was Subway, where I consumed a footlong meatball sub on italian herbs and cheese, with old english cheese, lettuce, tomato and pepper, all toasted - affectionately called 'the usual'.
I then checked out Queens Plaza. There weren't many shops open yet but the whole place with swarming with people checking it out. There's an EB downstairs, which is really the only thing that interests me. The whole place smelt very new.
I bummed around the mall for quite some time, and also spent a good 45 minutes at JB Hi-Fi (as one does). Didn't buy anything. I followed that up with a trip to the casino. Didn't throw any money down the money-hole this time round, but had a good time watching the roulette and blackjack. I find the whole "and... no more bets" thing that the roulette dudes do to be extremely cool.
I then headed over to Southbank, loitered there for a little while before checking the time. It was only 1730, so I rugged up, fired up some 311 on the discman and slept on a bench by the river for an hour. The security dude in his little electric security buggy drove past a few times, and some Japanese tourists prodded me awake and insisted I take their photo, but apart from that it was a very pleasant and relaxing time. At 1820, I roused myself, strolled over to Cinema 5 and jumped in the ticket line. Steve showed up about 30 seconds after that, so all up I thought it was pretty good timing!
And that was my afternoon. EOB

My last class for the semester is in a couple of minutes. it's almost all over for another half-year, and I can feel myself gradually sliding into holiday mode once again. Which isn't so good, because of course I have exams in a couple of weeks...
Something interesting has happened! The $300M Queens Plaza development is complete, after more than two years of construction. The started pulling the scaffolding down a few weeks ago, and I predicted a finish just in time for swotvac, and wasn't far off at all. They were open this morning, with lots of curious city-dwelling type people checking in out, and this afternoon I think I'll do the same.
The Atomic UQ meet (Monday afternoon) was a success. I rocked up a tad after two and spent some time walking up to random people asking if they were 'brains', or 'iorek', or 'estate' (which attracted lots of strange looks) before I eventually encountered brains.
estate and iorek made their entrance a little later, putting to death the myth that iorek and brains are the same person (the iorek = aioth thing is all still up in the air though). über-Bantumi made an appearance, but Sxio never showed - shame Sxio, shame.
Overall, though, it was jolly good meeting these fellas, sharing a drink or two and getting to know the faces behind the names. Looking forward to the next meet, for sure!
